Melanie Wilson-Lawson
Professor, Texas Southern University
Melanie earned her PhD in social work from the University of Houston in 2002 and holds both a Masters in Public Health from U of H and a B.S. in Chemistry from Texas Southern University. She is currently tenured Professor at Texas Southern University teaching in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
Prior to her appointment at TSU, Melanie worked as a project manager in the social and behavioral research group with the University of Houston Department of Psychology, and taught in HISD.
Melanie is deeply interested in women's issues. She served as a Graduate Researcher for the Greater Houston Women's Foundation to report on the status of academic preparation for females to compete in the 20th century job-force and presented at the University of Houston area Women's Conference in 1998. In 2006 she was included in the 26th Edition of Who's Who of American Women. The same year she was chosen to represent Houston in Who's Who of Women in Education in the 2006/2007 "Honors Edition" of the registry.
Melanie volunteer work has focused primarily on civic outreach, including the Houston NAACP and HIV/AIDS and committee member for HISD strategic planning in all areas of education related to teachers, students and parental concerns. She is an Executive Board Member for the Sandra Organ Dance Company and serves as a Community Fund Board Member for The Houston Society, serves as a Faculty Advisor for the American College of Healthcare Executives at the Texas Southern University Chapter and is a member of the Houston chapter of Jack & Jill of America, Inc.
