Hope Farms
Hope Farms™, a Houston-based, non-profit urban agriculture education project is envisioned as the ultimate complement to our school-based programming and a national model dedicated to changing how families understand their food while increasing access to fresh produce in underserved communities.
Working with the Mayor's office and a group of engaged businesspeople, philanthropists, and non-profits, Recipe for Success is undertaking what promises to be the largest urban agricultural project in the country. Hope Farms™ will transform unused urban property into a fully functional, vertically integrated, organic showcase farm managed by professionals and operated with the assistance of paid students and interns.
Hope Farms™ will host field trips for students to observe and participate in planting, cultivation, harvesting and preparation of fresh food. Ultimately it will be the home of the Recipe for Success Seed-to-Plate Nutrition Education™ Center where signature RFS cooking & gardening classes--after-school, during weekend programs and in summer camps--will be offered.
Regular Hope Farms™ programming will empower students with access to micro-business learning opportunities such as
* Discounted produce distribution to communities with limited access to fresh food
* On site farm stand
* Retail produce sales
* Development and distribution of Hope Farms™ prepared product line
* Commercialize composting
Hope Farms™ will serve as the lead in a pilot Farm to School program for Houston area school districts. Texas has year-round growing seasons and Houston is surrounded by dozens of small family farms producing a wide variety of food. RfS intends to take full advantage of this as a vehicle to get fresh food to Houston schoolchildren. Through our Healthy School Lunch and Farm-to-School initiatives, we will help pave the way for area farmers to join Hope FarmsCoop™ in providing fresh produce, meat & dairy products to the school lunch program. RfS will also facilitate Farmers in Schools--classroom presentations and school visits by Houston-area farmers and field trips to farms and ranches for Houston school children.
