Chefs in Schools started in five of Houston's elementary schools last week when dozens of Houston's finest chefs visited fourth grade classrooms in five HISD elementary schools.
Armed with new aprons for the kids to wear and tasting samples of 18 different foods to help illustrate the sense of taste, the chefs led their young students through salty, sour, sweet, bitter, tart and unami while they talked about everyone's favorite foods and the things they wanted to learn how to cook.
Pizza was high on most children's list but their new teachers have a healthy version in store for them. Twenty-two fourth grade classes will get a monthly visit and cooking instruction from their chef from now through May. Also during the year, they will visit the chef's restaurant, go to a farm and take a shopping trip to Whole Foods, which is provisioning the classes.

This is so cool! Have you approached any of the chefs that pass through giving classes at places like Sur La Table and Central Market? That might be another good avenue for publicity. Which schools are participating? Melinda (Travis ES parent)
