Amber Alaniz-Owens, Seed-to-Plate Nutrition Education™ Teacher, Rodriguez Elementary
Amber Alaniz-Owens has found her joy teaching at-risk youth in the RfS Recipe Gardens and Kitchen Lab at Rodriguez Elementary. She has been interested in childhood health and education for several years and her collaborative work on the Eat This, Baby!™ Parent Nutrition Classes in 2008, led her to return to school to pursue a career in nurse-midwifery and post-partum nutrition. She is also studying to become an internationally board-certified breastfeeding counselor, and regularly advocates for the health of mothers, infants, and communities on political and social levels.
Before joining the Recipe for Success team, Owens was a dedicated community gardener and vegan activist. She has worked for a ceremonial tea master, helped develop vegetarian-friendly menu options for several nascent cafes in Houston, and taught organic gardening to youth. She studied at Goddard College's Individualized BA program and thrives in the dynamic company of creative and joyful minds. In her free time, Owens enjoys spinning yarn, dancing with her husband, and making radical fiber arts.
